“I am writing to share an update regarding an incident that occurred today during a Hickerson Elementary field trip.

“Over the lunch hour, as students were finishing their meal at Fred Deadman Park, a man approached a staff member and indicated that he had a firearm and a knife in his possession. Staff members did not see either weapon.

“A staff member immediately called 911, and Manchester City Police responded. At the same time, our staff and bus drivers acted quickly to move students safely onto the bus and away from the individual. Everyone is OK.

“We understand many students are understandably shaken by what happened. Counselors are available to assist today and in the days ahead, and we encourage families to reach out if your child needs additional support.
