On Wednesday, Dec. 17, Coffee County Sheriff Chad Partin gave a report about crime statistics for 2025.

The report was posted on the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD) Facebook page in a video and was followed up with a photo of statistics on the seizure of illegal narcotics in the community.

“When I was reading through these stats, I was highly impressed with the work that is being done by our Special Investigations Unit,” Partin said.

Partin thanked the narcotics division’s partners at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation; the Hamilton, Franklin, and Rutherford County sheriff’s departments; and the Metro Davidson County, Tullahoma, and Manchester police departments. He clarified that the statistics compiled were not purely a result of CCSD’s efforts but are also a result of many collaborations with the above agencies.

Over the past year, the Special Investigations Unit has seized:

  • 34 firearms
  • 1.9 ounces of ketamine
  • 285 hits of acid/LSD
  • 3.6 ounces of MDMA
  • 4.49 ounces of psychedelic mushrooms
  • 2.64 pounds of fentanyl
  • 25 pounds of marijuana
  • 35 pounds of cocaine
  • 112 pounds of methamphetamine

Partin highlighted that the amount of marijuana seized was “way down” from previous years, saying the department normally seized around 100 pounds of marijuana each year. He commented that the amount of fentanyl seized was “scary” and that the amount of cocaine seized had risen.

Methamphetamine remains the county’s top drug seized in weight and amount. Partin said that it was about equal in impact to fentanyl due because fentanyl is a powerful drug.

“There’s a lot of equality right there. The fentanyl is so deadly,” Partin said. “We’re still working those overdose death cases. The people that are pushing this and selling these products and causing death to our citizens, we’re going to go after those folks.”

Partin also reported crime statistics including warrants served, cases assigned, persons arrested, and types of crimes committed.

Partin said that overall crime in Coffee County is decreasing. He used the example of breaking and entering cases, which have been cut in half since 2021. He said that homeowners should continue “doing what they’re doing” to improve their home security. He said home security systems are probably contributing to the decrease.

Partin emphasized that while overall crime is decreasing, fraud cases are “out the roof.” He said scammers are taking advantage of the elderly through schemes like impersonating law enforcement.

“If you’ve not met this person or you don’t know this person, don’t give them anything,” Partin said. “Come up here and talk to us.”

Fraud crimes can be devastating as scammers may take everything that the victim has. Lieutenant of Investigations Brandon Reed said he had just handled a fraud case where a family was scammed out of $350,000.

“These types of crimes are solvable but they’re extremely hard,” Reed said.

Partin added that one victim of fraud had turned to suicide due to her hopelessness.

Partin and Reed encouraged citizens to talk with their elderly loved ones about scams and to follow the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page for scam alerts.
