The Tullahoma Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. April Norris as the new Tullahoma City Schools Director of Schools during a special-called board meeting on Tuesday night.

“On behalf of the Tullahoma Board of Education, we are thrilled to be moving forward with Dr. April Norris as she transitions to the position of Director of Schools,” said Board Chairman Kim Uselton. “Dr. Norris has been with Tullahoma City Schools for 13 years in a variety of positions and has had great success in all of her roles. We are excited about the future of TCS under Dr. Norris’ leadership.”

Dr. Norris moves into the Director of Schools role after spending the last six years as TCS Deputy Director of Schools. She will be taking over for Dr. Catherine Stephens, who announced in October that she would be retiring on June 30.

“I chose to join Tullahoma City Schools because of its reputation for valuing employees, maintaining high academic expectations and unwavering community support,” said Dr. Norris. “As the new Director of Schools, I will continue to uphold these principles and work alongside our teachers, staff and administrators, lead efforts to further align curriculum, instruction, and school culture with future-ready goals. I am excited to continue this journey and share my vision for continuing the high-quality, innovative educational experiences with the Tullahoma community.”

In total, Dr. Norris has spent over 32 years in education. She holds a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Cumberland University, a Specialist in Education in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Technological University, a Master of Education in Elementary Education from Tennessee State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Middle Tennessee State University.

Prior to serving as Deputy Director of Schools, Dr. Norris held several roles in the district. She entered TCS as a special education teacher before being named Principal of Bel-Aire Elementary School. She also served as the district’s Director of Special Education until 2020, when she moved to the Deputy Director of Schools position.

“I am ecstatic that Dr. Norris has been named the new TCS Director of Schools,” said Dr. Stephens. “Before I arrived as superintendent, the role of Deputy Director, as it is today, did not exist. When this role was presented to the board as a new position, it was intended to support the Director of Schools, and, when necessary, the Deputy Director would be prepared to assume the superintendent role. I have witnessed firsthand how TCS has flourished under Dr. Norris’s leadership as Deputy Director. I can think of no other person better suited to serve as the next superintendent. The future of Tullahoma City Schools is bright with her leading the way.”
