MTSU Breaks Ground on New Aviation Facility in Shelbyville

By Katie Northcott, News Director

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) held a ceremonial groundbreaking on Wednesday, Dec. 3 for its new aviation facility in Shelbyville.

The new facility will be over a $73 million investment by MTSU into expanding its aviation program. Bedford County Mayor Chad Graham and county commissioners Greg Vick and John Boutwell were among the ceremony attendees.

“MTSU is moving its aerospace program to Shelbyville from its previous home at a general aviation airport in Murfreesboro,” Bedford County said in a Facebook post. “The new facility, scheduled for completion in fall 2027, will include a new hangar and operations building, with future phases of the project planned to include a classroom building, more hangars and even student housing.”
