“Riley” Named Tullahoma’s Official Axolotl

By Katie Northcott, News Director

At its meeting on Monday, May 11, the Tullahoma Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) recognized Riley as the Official Axolotl of Tullahoma.

Riley is an axolotl owned by the Hands-On Science Center (HOSC). The HOSC asked for name submissions to help name the axolotl. The name “Riley” was submitted by Nolan Hice in honor of his younger brother, Riley, who died recently from heart complications related to Down Syndrome.

“Times like this is when you’re grateful to be living in a small town,” Riley and Nolan’s father said at the BOMA meeting. “When Riley passed away, I promised to Riley, I promised to God that we would tell his story any time we could. What a cool way to be able to remember Riley and his legacy–through a axolotl.”

On Thursday, May 14, the Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated Riley with a ribbon cutting at the HOSC. Nolan’s elementary school class was invited to attend the celebration and explore the HOSC for free.
