On Wednesday, March 11, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) took a man into custody who had fired rounds on Manchester Highway.
Around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the RCSO made a Facebook post saying that Highway 41 was closed between Epps Mill Road and Big Springs Road “due to an emergency situation.”
About an hour later, that post was followed by the following statement:
“Residents who live in the Buchanan community of Rutherford County are asked to stay inside their homes during an ongoing emergency situation.
“Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies, paramedics and other emergency responders are on the scene.
“As a precaution, U.S. Highway 41 South is closed between Epps Mill Road and Big Springs Road.
“Interstate 24 is closed both toward Nashville and Chattanooga from the Coffee County line to South Church Street in Murfreesboro.
“An alternate route will be for eastbound traffic toward Nashville will be to take Exit 97 to Highway 64 to Wartrace and U.S. Highway 231 North to Interstate 24 in Murfreesboro.
“Traffic toward Chattanooga may take U.S. Highway 231 South to Shelbyville and travel through Bell Buckle and Highway 64 back to I-24.”
The route was eventually reopened and around 5 p.m., the RCSO published the following statement:
“Man taken into custody after firing rounds on Manchester Highway.
“A man armed with firearms and experiencing a crisis was taken into custody without injury Thursday on Manchester Highway, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s supervisor said.
“Deputies responded to his home for a welfare check after he apparently suffered the crisis for three days, said Sgt. Nick Coble. They learned he threatened family members Wednesday.
“While gathering information at a neighbor’s home, deputies heard multiple sounds of gunfire at the residence.
“The house was located between Manchester Highway and close to Interstate 24.
“Supervisors feared the man might randomly fire at travelers on the nearby interstate so as a precaution they closed Manchester Highway and requested Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers to close I-24.
“Crisis Response Team deputies attempted to reach him by phone for negotiations but he didn’t answer.
“Drone operators, K9 teams and the Sheriff’s and Murfreesboro Police SWAT Teams monitored his movement inside and outside the house and heard several more gunfire sounds from inside the home.
“‘SWAT took him into custody as he exited the house,’ Coble said.
“Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services paramedics and Rutherford County Fire-Rescue firefighters were on standby near the scene.
“’All agencies worked together and had the best outcome we could have,’ Coble said.
“Charges are pending.”
