Tennessee Governor Calls Special Session to Consider Redistricting

By Katie Northcott, News Director

According to reporting from Fox News, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee called a redistricting special legislative session to weigh adopting a map that might flip Tennessee’s lone Democratic seat on the US House of Representatives.

Fox News said that Lee called the special session after a conversation with President Donald Trump following a Supreme Court ruling that “race should not be used to dictate the drawing of legislative district maps.”

According to Fox News, “Louisiana v. Callais struck down a Louisiana congressional map that created a second majority-Black district and narrowed the use of race in redistricting under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.” Other states, including Alabama, are also considering redistricting maps due to the ruling.

The Tennessee redistricting would likely most affect Rep. Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Memphis.
