At a study session of the Tullahoma Board of Mayor and Alderman (BOMA) on Thursday, Feb. 5, Tullahoma Mayor Lynn Sebourn said more safety and accountability is needed at the Tullahoma Regional Airport.
Sebourn said that in the interest of providing accountability, he planned to form an airport steering committee.
Sebourn’s statement came after an hour and a half discussion centering around who is responsible to pay Ozone Environmental Services (OES), the private company that provided clean up services after a fuel spill at the airport in October. Members of BOMA, the Tullahoma Airport Authority, and other city staff discussed whether the Airport Authority or the City of Tullahoma needed to pay OES.
City Attorney Brittany Hoskins explained that the Airport Authority could only spend money for airport-related expenses and that the law is ambiguous about whether the fuel clean up would be considered airport-related.
City Finance Director Sue Wilson advised BOMA to take out a loan to pay the $744,000 bill. City Administrator Jason Quick added that the process to obtain a loan could start as soon as the loan was officially approved by BOMA. The soonest BOMA meeting is Monday, Feb. 9.
Hoskins warned that if OES was not paid soon, the company would be within their rights to take legal action against the airport and the city.
